The Watatic Farm Story
Hi! I’m Farmer Lis. I started Watatic Farm because it has been my life-long dream to own and operate my own vegetable farm to provide clean and delicious food to my community.
I have been farming at diverse operations for almost 20 years. I’ve worked at more conventional vegetable farms, smaller CSA based farms, mainly greenhouse vegetable operations and berry farms. I’ve raised chickens and pigs and sheep and goats, but have found my truest passion is in growing seasonal fruits, vegetables and flowers.
I am so excited to now only farm in a way that feels right to me. Now that I have my own land, I only purchase local, non-GMO seeds from Johnny’s Selected Seeds in Winslow Maine. I practice strictly no-spray farming. No pesticides, no herbicides, no fungicides ever. It takes a little more time and attention to keep the bugs and weeds at bay, but I think it’s worth it.
I find so much joy in feeding people, and I love to come up with fun ways for families to cook together and try new foods. I hope to meet you on this amazing journey into small-business ownership and operation and can’t wait to chat about all the fun ways you’ve come up with to prepare your veggies too!
The Goals
My goals are to grow my business in a sustainable way, to build up healthy soil without the use of chemical fertilizers, to expand my small vegetable stand and provide weekly recipes to my customers. I plan to continue to work with other local growers and producers to make vegetables and other farm-grown products available to as many people as we can. I will be a caretaker of the land working to find innovative ways to be more sustainable. I hope to encourage more families to eat locally and enjoy their time in the kitchen and at their dinner tables together.
